Voters in Toronto-Danforth head to the polls Monday to elect Layton successor
It's byelection day in Toronto-Danforth, as voters choose a successor to Jack Layton. The increasingly popular Layton held the riding for the New Democrats through four elections before his death last August.
Polls and pundits suggest the NDP's Craig Scott will easily win the vote in the riding with strong NDP roots.
Liberal candidate Grant Gordon is hoping to turn the riding red, but his campaign began late and Layton's halo still looms large.

Apple shedding depression era mentality on cash hoarding
Apple will hold a conference call Monday to outline what it will do with its $97 billion in net cash on its balance sheet. Regardless of the outcome, Apple appears to be ready to shed its cash hoarding mentality that came from a near-death experience in the 1990s.
Although it’s hard to believe today given that Apple is selling its latest iPad and covering the globe with iPhones, the company was on the ropes in the mid-1990s. In fact, Microsoft’s $150 million investment in Apple in 1997 was huge for the company. Microsoft also said it would develop and ship future versions of its Office juggernaut for Apple’s platform.
That little footnote highlights why Apple has such a cash hoard. Once you’ve been broke—or come close to being that way—you tend to appreciate a cash cushion a little bit more. Then Apple CFO Fred Anderson said the Microsoft investment strengthened “Apple’s viability.” Can you imagine such a comment today? Simply put, Apple has come a long way.

Loving my Blackberry Playbook
Well I have to say the I am loving this 2.0 update. Just bought our 2nd Playbook and I have to say that I have no complaints. The Android player update has helped to make this a must have device. To be honest you can't go wrong with the price. Now if we can only get Netflix and Skyped support, this would be an absolute gem. I am curious what RIM's plans are and when the new PB refresh will happen. For those considering getting a Kindle Fire, forget it. Price point makes no sense. Can't wait to see the new QNX phones, a.k.a BB 10. RIM just needs to speed up the development time.

Billy Bishop Airport gets a tunnel to more profits and more destinations.
It's amazing that we have gone from wanting to remove the airport to now creating a tunnel. I remember when this was an issue in Toronto. Now, Porter Airlines, has shown it can work! Porter has become one of the de facto airlines considered when wanting to travel to Montreal, Ottawa, Boston, New York, Nortern Ontario and even Myrtle Beach. There are far more destinations to list, including the east coast and the potential of expanding to the west. Again, many were not sure if it would even work, yet it has. Now with the prospects of a tunnel I imagine that Billy Bishop Airport will get even busier. I am sure some of the residents of the area are not happy, but in the end what choice do they have. It's all progress I guess.

Toronto News: Landowners who fought Pickering airport plan mark 40 years
As they have said for years, we do not need another Mirabel! With urban sprawl and the ever growing size of Toronto will this issue ever go away? There is an airport in Hamilton and another in London, Ontario, along with Porter and Jazz at the Toronto Island Airport. Is it time to settle this issue or is the Government just doing prudent planning, just in case? Chadich Thomas.
Looks like everything is going to change in transit again!
Looks like I spoke to soon! So is this a tit-for-tat moment? This will definitely make it more interesting for sure. I am guessing that we are definitely going to get right-of-ways on Eglinton. I was going to say I can't wait to see what happens, but I already am stuck in traffic!

Toronto Transit in Slow Motion
Unreal as it may seem Toronto council is back to fighting over transit priorities in the city. It's unfortunate but we have seen this before. Promises made and then broken. Ideas and plans, with nothing to show for it. The public just wants to get something done. Seems that an end to the Don Valley parking lot, slow travel on Eglinton, lack of efficient transit nodes will continue. Or will it?
An interesting vote will take place shortly and my guess is we will end of with a Sheppard line terminating at Victoria Park, which is what it should have been in the first place if it was not cancelled years ago. We should be honest with the public and stop using the term subways. Many I talk to think that Eglinton Cross-town will be a subway like the Bloor-Danforth. This is not the case. However, my guess is that we will also see the Eglinton Cross-town go above ground. I believe the compromise will be exactly where above ground. Current plans are for a line above ground around Leslie, however I suspect that there maybe a push to have it go to at least past Don Mills Rd. What's unfortunate is why they did not simply consider keeping it above ground to just before Victoria Park and then creating an underground station, similar to St. Clair West or Harbourfont (nothing fancy - even elevated may work). Maybe we just need to cut and cover at certain nodes, providing some underground portions to the line. Talk has been so focused around subways and right-of-ways that there has been no talk about compromise.
Let's look for some of the easy wins, which will allow all involved to have some form of victory. I believe, based on the businesses (box stores really) between Pharmacy and Kennedy, its fine if this portion is a right-away. I think it will add character to the area anyway and allow for a few extra stops. Another compromise would be to elevate some sections, between Don Mills and Pharmacy; keeping the speed of the LRT reliable. We do not need another LRT on Finch West, at the moment, so I will just call that a bit of gravy for now. Lets simply add in a bus-way, seeing that there is an extension to the Spadina line and there will be a Finch West station. Nothing wrong with what York Region did with Viva buses. Lets look for some easy alternatives, utilizing the funds we have and get on with the work! Stop arguing because we certainly have waited in traffic long enough.
